Andrew Barham – Liberal Democrat candidate for the St Leonards & St Ives by‑election

Andrew Barham is a familiar face in the local community. He and his wife Sue have lived in Ashley Heath since 2018, where they enjoy Dorset’s countryside with their two cats and spend much of their free time walking and cycling in Moors Valley and Avon Heath.

Before retiring, Andrew spent 30 years as an accountant and tax adviser, supporting businesses to manage their finances responsibly. He hopes to draw on that experience to help ensure residents receive good value for money from their council tax and that local services are run efficiently.

Andrew is actively involved in community life. He volunteers with Citizens Advice, supporting residents facing challenges with housing, benefits and day‑to‑day pressures. He also works with East Dorset Green Spaces rangers and Butterfly Conservation, helping to protect the natural habitats that define the character of St Leonards & St Ives.

Priorities

Supporting access to local health services

Andrew is aware of the increasing pressure on local health provision. With only one limited GP practice, one pharmacy and no dentist in the immediate area, many residents travel to Ringwood, Ferndown or further afield for routine care. He wants to highlight these pressures and work toward improving access so people can receive treatment closer to home.

Improving public transport

Living locally, Andrew has seen how limited bus services affect residents who rely on them for shopping, appointments and staying connected with friends and family. He is interested in improving the reliability and frequency of local bus routes to help keep communities accessible and connected.

Protecting local green spaces

From Avon Heath Country Park to Lions Hill and Moors Valley, the ward is home to some of Dorset’s most valued natural spaces. Andrew wants to help safeguard these areas so they remain protected and enjoyable for future generations, recognising the role they play in the community’s identity and wellbeing.
